Christ's humiliation consisted in his being born, and that in a low condition,1
made under the law,2
undergoing the miseries of this life,3
the wrath of God,4
and the cursed death of the cross;5
in being buried, and continuing under the power of death for a time.6
And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no
room for them in the inn.
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made himself of no
reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled
himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
2 Corinthians 8:9.
For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that,
though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.
But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law.
He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was
despised, and we esteemed him not.
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God,
why hast thou forsaken me?
And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, saying,
Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. And there appeared an angel unto him from
heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth
on a tree.
